When breeding designer dogs, typically a doodle mix, there is a variety in coat type. To understand, you must first know that furnishings refers to the longer haid on the face of a dog (mustache, eyebrows, beard). It gives a goldendoodle a teddy bear/scruffy look. Furnishings are a dominant trait. A puppy only needs one copy from one parent to get the look. A goldendoodle that does NOT carry furnishings will tend to shed more and will look more like a purebred golden retriever.
Curly Coat
If each parent has a curl gene and the puppy inherits it from both parents, the coat will appear really curly.
Wavy Coat
If a goldendoodle gets one curl gene from one parent and a non curl gene from the other, they will have a wavy coat.
Straight Coat
If a goldendoodle inherits no curl genes from its parents and has furnishings, the fur will appear completely straight and a fluffy texture.
Flat Coat
This is considered an “improper coat” and typically means the dog does not have furnishings.
